As Snow Begins to Fly, San Diego to Mammoth Flights Begin

Woolly, the very furry Mammoth Mountain mascot, greets passengers as they board the inaugural flight in San Diego at 7 a.m. on Thursday at San Diego International Airport. Woolly will be glad to get back to the 23 degree weather at Mammoth. — San Diego International Airport

This morning the temperature at Mammoth is 23 degrees and there is a 50 percent chance of snow. Chances look good for a ho-hum one inch of fresh powder.

While the base might be a vapor-thin 24 inches at the highest elevations, there is good news: United begins non-stop daily flights between San Diego and Mammoth Lakes.

You'll appreciate it more later in the season when the base is about the height of your house.

The inaugural flight took off at 7:40 a.m. today, complete with airport officials and a large furry creature called Woolly on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Flights between the two cities will be on a 66-seat Bombardier CRJ-700 Regional Jet operated by SkyWest Airlines, a United Express partner. The aircraft is equipped with 6 first-class seats, 28 Economy Plus seats with additional legroom and 32 economy class seats.

Ticket prices vary. If you want to leave tomorrow, Dec. 16, a round-trip ticket is $377. One booked for Jan. 23 to 30th came in at $188. But a Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 trip shows up on United's own website as $1024.

The daily round-trip service leaves San Diego International Airport at 7:40 a.m. and arrives at Mammoth Yosemite Airport at 9:04 a.m.

The return flight leaves Mammoth at 3:41 p.m. and lands in San Diego at 5:08 p.m.
