San Diego First U.S. Host to America's Cup Series

America's Cup teams train in 45-foot catamarans near Auckland, New Zealand. Competitors will race in San Diego Bay starting Saturday.

San Diego, the third stop for the 2011-12 America's Cup and only one on the West Coast, is the first U.S. city to host an event in the race's World Series. Spectators can cheer on the world's top sailors, piloting nine state-of-the-art catamarans from seven nations in match and fleet races over San Diego Bay at speeds exceeding 30 mph. Land activities include dining and shopping at America's Cup Village, a racing simulator ride, and a battle of the bands event. The last half of the event coincides with the San Diego Wine & Food Festival.

Vitals: Saturday-Nov. 20, San Diego Bay. For prices and locations, see www.americascup.com. San Diego information: (619) 236-1212, www.sandiego.org.
