San Diego Stage Events Off The Beaten Path

By James Hebert

As the Old Globe's Shakespeare Festival and other big summer productions loom, here's a quick look at some other San Diego stage happenings that might've sneaked under your radar. Or, in the case of this first show, sonar:

Innermission Productions returns to the local scene with "Swimming in the Shallows," a play by Adam Bock (with Carla Nell directing) that involves - at least in a part - a man's romance with a shark. It is not, so far as can be determined, a documentary. This work of aquatic absurdity (The New York Times called it "a screwy little jewel of a play") runs June 4-26 at Diversionary Theatre in University Heights; details at innermissionproductions.org .

• Native Voices at the Autry, a project of the L.A.-based Autry National Center, has returned to town with its annual new-play festival. The event's four works, all centered on Native American themes, unfold June 2-4 at La Jolla Playhouse. (Among the actors are Kimberly Guerrero, now appearing in the Globe production of "August: Osage County" and Carla Nell, following up on her acclaimed appearance in our previous item.) Tickets and info: NativeVoicesAtTheAutry.org , or (323) 667-2000, ext. 354.

• The W.S. Gilbert comedy "Foggerty's Fairy" receives its San Diego premiere (according to the Talent to aMuse theater company) next week. And none too soon: The piece premiered in London in 1881. Talent to aMuse will stage the play over three weekends June 3-18, at Swedenborg Hall in University Heights. More: (619) 233-9407, or email info@talenttoamuse.com
