CA Population Largest In Nation

California still the largest state - Census 2010 data released

Today the U.S. Census Bureau released the initial results of the 2010 Census. The results show:

  • National population: 308,745,538
  • California population: 37,253,956

The fastest rate of population growth was in the South (adding more than 14 million residents), followed by the West (increase of nearly 9 million). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 60 percent of growth is a result of births and life expectancy, and about 40 percent is a result of migration.

This is the first time in U.S. history in which the West region (of which California is a part) is larger than the Midwest. California is still the most populous state (37,253,956); Wyoming is the least populous (563,626). The state that gained the most numerically since the 2000 Census was Texas (up 4,293,741 to 25,145,561) and the state that gained the most as a percentage of its 2000 Census count was Nevada (up 35.1% to 2,700,551).

The primary Constitutional purpose of the Census is to apportion representatives to Congress. Since 1940 there has been a shift of 79 seats toward the South and West. With the 2010 Census results California will have 53 seats in the House of Representatives, with an average district size of more than 710,000 residents.

To collect this information, a survey including 10 questions was sent to every household in America in early 2010. With an extraordinary high response rate, 74 percent of households returned those forms, and the remaining 26 percent of households were counted by follow-up with Census workers.

Data for smaller areas, including San Diego County, will be released beginning in the spring of 2011.
