RESCUE gives voice to the quiet ones who simply get it done, bringing home the importance of worldwide response to natural disasters. It shows the training and mindsets of the individuals who answered the call, both personally and professionally, to provide humanitarian aid to those in need, after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti. Their interwoven stories bring a sense of quiet humility and devotion to others, an epic journey of hope in the world of disaster and emergency response, captured in unprecedented scale and impact for the giant IMAX screen. At the RESCUE Expo, learn how local professionals respond to major disasters, experience an 8.0 simulated earthquake, and see live demonstrations by the SDFD and others. More>>

"Tinkering" People - Hugo and Inventors
Hugo Along with Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Leonardo da Vinci; Steve Jobs was a tinkerer/inventor, as were George Méliès and Rube Goldberg; Hedy Lamarr and George Washington Carver, Temple Grandin and Juan Lozano. The creations they developed have clearly taken on a life of their own and changed our world. Like Hugo Cabret recreating a secret automaton (see: current blockbuster film Hugo), 'Doc' Brown (that DeLorean in Back To the Future); and the current fascination with all things created with gear-and-lever technology in 'steampunk;' tinkering is no longer your grandpa's hobby! Follow in their inventive footsteps in the "Tinkering Studio" and create your own mythology! More>>

"Tinkering Studio" Opens Tuesday, December 27.

Thar She Blows! Moby-Dick sings about WHALES
WHALES Literature, High Art and Reality writ large - Join us to make solid connections between the world of marine science in the IMAX film WHALES and San Diego Opera's upcoming Moby-Dick. Hosts Dr. Nicolas Reveles, the Geisel Director of Education and Outreach for SDO, and Dr. Ann Bowles, Senior Research Biologist at Hubbs-Sea World Institute, will share dramatic audio and visual highlights from the new opera; as well as how author Herman Melville used his own experiences on the high seas for Captain Ahab's obsession with his nemesis. Then follow blue, humpback, orca, and right WHALES to the ocean depths to witness the sights, sounds, and survival of the migrations of the world's largest mammal. Pre-purchase required at San Diego Opera web site

Family Science Saturdays in the "Tinkering Studio"
Family Science Saturdays
Join us in the new "Tinkering Studio" for hands-on building fun each Saturday led by our tinkering gurus. Visitors work together on creative activities designed to spark curiosity and foster exploration. Make origami and Spirograph artwork; design and construct simple mechanical toys like tops, catapults and musical instruments; build marble "roller coasters" using tubes and ramps, or create "digital bling" using colorful LED lights, batteries and accessories. In January, our tinkering guru will assist visitors with building catapults and stomp rockets. Activities are included with admission (no extra charge) and all ages are welcome to join in the fun. Black Holes exhibit Exhibit: "Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists" explores what we know, don't know, and think we know about one of the world's greatest space mysteries-black holes. These regions in space, sometimes only a few kilometers across, have gravity so powerful that light cannot escape and matter drawn into them is lost forever. Consumer Confidence Index Surges in December

NEW YORK (AP) -- Americans are gaining faith that the economy is on the upswing.

An improving job outlook helped the Consumer Confidence Index soar to the highest level since April and near a post-recession peak, according to a monthly survey by The Conference Board.

The second straight monthly surge coincided with a decent holiday shopping season for retailers, though stores had to heavily discount to attract shoppers.

The rise in confidence jives with a better outlook for the overall economy. An Associated Press poll of three dozen private, corporate and academic economists projects U.S. economic growth will speed up in 2012, if it isn't derailed by upheavals in Europe.

... The Conference Board, a private research group, said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index rose almost 10 points to 64.5 in December, up from a revised 55.2 in November. Analysts had expected 59. The level is close to the post-recession high of 72, reached in February.

The December surge builds on a big increase in November, when the index rose almost 15 points from October. That month's reading was the lowest since March 2009, the depths of the recession.

One component of the index that measures how shoppers feel now about the economy rose to 46.7 from 38.3 in November. The other barometer, which measures how shoppers feel about the next six months, rose to 76.4 from 66.4.

In particular, shoppers' assessment of the job market improved, according to preliminary results of the survey conducted Dec. 1-14. Those anticipating more jobs in the months ahead increased to 13.3 percent from 12.4 percent while those anticipating fewer jobs declined to 20.2 percent from 23.8 percent.

Economists watch confidence numbers closely because consumer spending — including items like health care — accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Americans have more reason to be optimistic. The economy has produced at least 100,000 new jobs for five months in a row, the longest such streak since 2006. The number of people applying for unemployment benefits has dropped to the lowest level since April 2008.

According to the AP poll of economists, conducted Dec. 14-20, the U.S. economy is expected to grow 2.4 percent next year. In 2011, it likely grew less than 2 percent ...

San Diego Uptown Area Median Condo Prices thru Nov 2011

MED CONDO PRICES 201111 UpTown.pdf Download this file

Greetings All,

The latest in San Diego SOLD home prices through Nov, 2011.

For CONDOS, in the 13 different zip codes which I track, the median sold prices look like:

·         Compared to 1 mo ago, 31% of zips either went up in market value or stayed essentially the same (within +/-5% median market value) over values of the prior month. Most notable of these was Kensington / Normal Heights with a 23% price increase on 10 condos sold and Pacific Beach with a 22% increase on 18 condos sold in the subject month.

·         Compared to 2 mos ago, the market value of 54% are still either at a higher value or stayed essentially the same (within +/-5%) over the median values of 2 months prior. Here we have our leader being Bay Park / Old Town with an 11% increase on 9 condos sold. Also, over both of the past 2 mos straight, 23% of zips have shown an increase or stayed essentially the same in market value.

·         Compared to 1 year ago, we have 38% with a median market value either higher or essentially the same (within +/-5%).  In this 1 yr category, with a 35% increase over market values of 1 yr ago, is Pacific Beach with 18 condos sold.

Summary:   The below chart gives you an excellent overview of San Diego home prices by comparing the percentages of my tracked zip codes that either increased or held steady in home value:

% OF MY ZIPS THAT INCREASED
OR HELD STEADY IN HOME VALUES
JULY 2011
CONDOS
HOUSES
1 MO AGO
31%
67%
2 MO AGO
54%
61%
38%
39%

Keep in mind that my 13 zip codes for condos and 18 zip codes for houses, are only a portion of the entire San Diego picture. It is the norm for any one particular zip code to have a positive increase in market values for 1, 2, or 3 months and then in other months to see a decrease in market values. This is particularly common with changes in the season such as during the winter holiday season. While prices may go up & down within any given year-long period, what we are really looking for is a general increase from year to year so that the rise of the "up" months is higher and thus outweighs the dips of the "down" months. So if you see your particular zip(s) increase in market value from 1 yr prior, this is a good sign even though other zips or San Diego county as a whole may have gone down as in the winter months. The movement upward may be slow for sure, but, in those San Diego zip codes, it is still movement upward and the other zips and the county as a whole will also catch up in due time!
